Scientists say they resurrected the wolf that disappeared 12,500 years ago.

According to the Dallas-based biotechnic company Colossal Biosciences, a wolf species who died about 12,500 years ago lives again as the first successfully exhumed animal in the world”, writes CNNFollow Periscope.

Colossal scientists have created three wolf cubs using them Ancient DNA, clone technology and genetic modification to change the genes of a gray wolf, the most living of the prehistoric wolf, the company announced on Monday. The result is essentially a hybrid species similar to its extinct predecessor.

“This massive historic moment is the first of many future examples demonstrating that our group of endangered technology at last works,” said Ben Lam, cofounder and CEO of Colossal, in a statement.

The wolf's terrible fossils and ancient DNA

Using Ancient DNA extracted from two fossils of wolves, scientists and Colossal associates said they were able to collect two high-quality Aenocyon dirus genomes, or full genetic information groups.

The team compared the genomes to those of live canyons like wolves, dragons, and foxes to identify genetic variants of the specific characteristics of terrible wolves, such as white robes and the longest, thick fur.

The company then used information from genetic analysis to change gray wolf cells, making 20 modifications to 14 genes before cloning the most promising cell lines and toʹi transferred them to donor eggs, according to the news report.

Two hideous male wolf pups were born on October 1, 2024, while a female puppy was born on January 30, 2025, according to Colossal Biosciences.

To achieve its goal, the company essentially created a hybrid genome using CRISPR technology to cut down some variants of the gray wolf's genius and replace them with characteristics associated with terrible wolves, said Love Dalén, a professor in evolutionary genomology based at the Centre for Paleogenetics at Stockholm University and an adviser to Columbia.
