Secretary - General NATO, Mark Rutte, has declared that Russia may be planning to deploy nuclear weapons into space a move that would pose a major security risk on Earth.
For German Welt am Sontag, Rutte warned that such an action would enable Russia to destroy hundreds of satellites with a single blow, seriously affecting global communication, navigation and security systems, writes Newsweek, broadcast Periscope.
Rutte said that in response to new security challenges beyond the atmosphere, NATO allies were sharing intelligence, establishing new national space commands and developing smaller, more maneuverable and protected satellites.
This potential movement would be clearly opposed to the 1967 Foreign Space Treaty. An international agreement signed by the US and the former Soviet Union which prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction in space.
