Secretary - General NATO, Mark Rutte, has not provided any comment on the trilateral defence agreement between Kosovo, Albania and Croatia, as well as that between Serbia and Hungary.
During a media conference in Brussels, Rutte stressed that stability in the Western Balkans remains an issue of great importance for NATO, recalling the Alliance's presence with KFOR troops in Kosovo and engagement in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
However, he underlined that bilateral or trilateral agreements remain independent decisions of respective states, followed. Periscope.
“Stability in the Western Balkans is a major concern for NATO. For this reason, we are present in Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We have five allies in the region -- Montenegro, Albania, Northern Macedonia, Croatia and Slovenia -- with whom we are working closely. But I want to stress that it is not up to me to comment on any development in the region. These are decisions belonging to individual allies regarding bilateral or trilateral agreements,” stated Rutte.
He added that other NATO countries co-operate in various defence areas as well, but stressed that these agreements are exclusively in the competence of states and outside of the Alliance's intervention.
