Tensions flared up again in the Middle East on October 7th after militants of the radical Palestinian group based in the Gaza Strip, Hamas, launched a surprise invasion on Israeli territory, killing many Israeli Kibuk residents living near Gaza's border and kidnapping more than 240 Israelis, including women, children and older ones. Israel declared a total blockade of the Gaza Belt and began bombing the enclave.
On March 18th, Israel resumed hostilities at the Gaza Strip and carried out a series of attacks on Hamas' targets, cutting off the ceasefire that had been in force in enclaves since January 2025. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office explained the move with Hamas' refusal to advance proposals following talks with US envoy WWW. He claimed the purpose of the operation was to release all Israeli hostages. Hamas imposed responsibility for this recent spiral of escalation in Gaza over Israel and the United States.
According to recent data from the Israeli side, Hamas still holds 24 living hostages and 35 troops. /Periscope
