The US, Germany and Britain with a clear message to the next Government: Waiting for Co-ordination and Progress in Dialogue

Bilateral confidence, co-ordination and co-operation, as well as progress in dialogue with Serbia are some of the expectations of the United States of America, Germany and the United Kingdom of the new Government of Kosovo. These three countries, along with Italy and France, are part of the group of countries known as QUINT. Free Europe Radio has also asked the Embassy of Italy and France about their expectations from Kosovo's new executive, but these institutions have not returned.

On 15 April, the new composition of the Kosovo Assembly will be collected, during which MPs will be sworn in. On the agenda, at the Constitutional session of the ninth legislature, there is also the election of Kosovo Assembly Speaker and Vice Presidents, broadcasting Periscope.

The Assembly Constitution will pave the way for the election of the new Kosovo government. The February 9th election party, the incumbent prime minister's Vetevendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, is the first to have the right to try to form the new executive. However, Kurti has not yet secured the 61 votes needed for forming the government.

The US State Department told Radio Free Europe that the US has long supported Kosovo on the road to building a sovereign, democratic, multi-ethnic and prosperous state.

“We expect to work with Kosovo's new Government to support regional stability and security”, a spokesperson said UN for Radio Free Europe.

Germany's embassy in Pristina said it expects the president and deputy heads of the Parliament will be elected on 15 April, thus paving the way for the formation of the new Kosovo government.

In a statement to Radio Free Europe, the German Embassy said it also awaits “the continuation of close co-operation with Kosovo and its future government”, adding that it will continue to actively engage in Kosovo's integration into Euro-Atlantic structures.

To achieve this, mutual trust and continued co-operation are needed. Germany remains convinced that the future government will strengthen close co-ordination with international partners and work for visible progress in the facilitated dialogue by the European Union, helping to realise, as soon as, Kosovo's European perspective”, the German Embassy said.

Germany added that Kosovo's further approach to the EU is our “common goal, strengthening democracy, rule of law, as well as essential progress in the dialogue on normalisation with Serbia, including implementation of the Brussels and Ohrid Agreement with the respective annexes, are issues that must be reached”.

The British Embassy in Pristina said it hopes the future Kosovo Government will address the needs of all citizens, including progress in Serb integration and strong commitment in dialogue to normalisation of reports with Serbia.

The United Kingdom supports without reservation Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe and hopes it can meet the demands of others as soon as possible”, the British Embassy said in an answer sent to Radio Free Europe.

Establishing the association of Serb majority municipalities has been the main obstacle for Kosovo on its path towards membership in the Council of Europe. Kurti's government has been reluctant to form association, voicing fears it could undermine the sovereignty and functionality of the state of Kosovo.

Calls for progress in the dialogue also took place at the April 8th meeting of the UN Security Council, when Kosovo and Serbia exchanged charges.

Kosovo accused Serbia of continuing efforts to destabilise democracy in the country, “not only through rhetoric, but also through concrete and violent actions that endanger peace and security in the region”.

While Serbia accused Kosovo that the Serb situation in Kosovo is “compounding” because according to it, “has escalated the campaign for the systematic destruction of Serbian institutions throughout Kosovo”.

Even the allied states of Kosovo have been critical of the Government of Kosovo for, as they have said, unilateral and uncoordinated actions in the north of the country, where authorities have closed Serbian institutions.

Kosovo authorities began shutting down Serbian institutions for Kosovo at the beginning of 2024, with the reasoning that they have no permission to act and that their functioning is illegal. /Radio Europe Free
