Iran's Interior Minister has said neglect was a factor in the massive explosion and fire at the country's largest container port, while the death toll rose to at least 70.
Escandar Momen said Saturday's explosion at the port of Shahid Rajaee in Bandar Abbas, which also injured more than 1,000 people, was caused by <x0-managencies, including disrespect of precautionary security measures and neglect”.
“Certain individuals considered responsible” were called up for questioning, he added, wrote Euronews.
Customs authorities have said the imported cargo was involved in flames and erupted. The defence ministry has denied foreign reports that it was a shipment of a chemical for missile fuel.
Crisis Management Director for Hormozgan province Mehrdad Hassanzadah also said on Monday that the attempt to extinguish fires at the port was “almost in its final phases”.
In the meantime, Hormozhan's governor, Mohammad Ashur Tasian, said cleaning operations at the port could continue for several more days and that it may take one to two weeks before the situation there returns to normal.
He estimated that 1,500 hectares of almost two thirds of the country were severely affected by the explosion. /Periscope/
