Speaking in Brussels, he calls on European leaders to support the steps he has outlined for building a full and just “peace”.
The first step he describes is a truce in the air and sea. The next step is to release prisoners as a means to build confidence.
Zelensky emphasises that there must be basic “confidence” in ongoing negotiations and stresses that release of prisoners can help create this foundation.
“This should be based on understanding that any ceasefire or confidence-building measure can only serve as a prologue for a full and just solution, for a comprehensive security guarantee agreement and end of war”, Zelensky says.
Ukrainian president also says he is grateful for the support he has received so far, adding that his people estimate that “Europe is really trying to do the right thing”.
Earlier, Zelensky thanked other leaders for their support, saying: “throughout this entire period, and last week, you stayed with us”.
Meanwhile, Russia reiterates its opposition to European troops in Ukraine after any peace agreement, saying it would be <x0-> direct fight against”.
