I'm very proud of what we've done in the last 10 years. But tonight it's about our future as a party, as a country”, Trudeau said.
His daughter Ella-Grace introduced him on stage, said how proud he was of his father and joked that he was eager to see him less on social networks.
Trudeau, evidently emotional, wiped his tears before turning to the crowd, broadcasts Telegrafi.
In his address, Trudeau warned of challenges ahead, especially those stemming from US-Canada relations.
“We will act diplomaticly when possible, but we will fight when we need”, he said.
He called on party members to stay committed.
Your country needs you more than ever. And I have no doubt that you will answer the call because you have already done this”, he said.
“Democracy is not a given thing, freedom is not a given thing, even Canada is not a given”, he added.
These values, he said, require constant vigilance, courage, and devotion.
Trudeau announced in January that he would withdraw after more than nine years in power after his popularity dropped significantly, forcing liberals to hold the party's domestic elections soon for a new leader.
Former Central Bank Governor Mark Carney has won the race to lead Canada's ruling Liberal Party, and Trudeau will succeed as prime minister.
Carney will take office at a turbulent time for Canada, which is in the middle of a trade struggle with the US under President Donald Trump and will soon have to hold general elections.
