The president's post is considered defined by “pazaret” for forming government

Although separate processes are, the election of Kosovo's president in April 2026 is considered demining also for forming the government after the February 9th parliamentary elections. According to political analysts, each eventual coalition for forming the government will include the president's position issue. The same say on the basis of [...]

The same say that on the basis of preliminary results, a coalition is needed among the largest parties in order to form a more stable government, which would then reflect positively even in the process of electing the president. However, it is estimated that if the winning election party, the Vetevendosje Movement, tries to form the government only with non-Serb communities and “fishery”, and any MP, then the president's case will be left at another moment.

Based on the CEC's preliminary results for the February 9th elections, without the involvement of conditional and diaspora votes, the Vetevendosje Movement is expected to have 47 deputies in the Assembly, PDK 25, LDK 20 and AAK-Nisma 8 deputies, as well as non-communal communities 20 MPs.

On the other hand, Kosovo's Assembly for electing the president must have 80 votes of 120 MPs as total as possible. If the presidential candidate fails to get these votes in the first two places, in the third round it will be elected with the votes of half the MPs.

Political analyst Blerim Canaj says about Kosova Prees, that forming any government with a simple majority would be problematic for electing the president, and therefore this post would have a role in forming the government.

Meanwhile, political analyst Alma Lama claims that in case of coalitions, the post of president will certainly be part of “patarities” for forming the government.

However, according to her, if she goes into a minority government, then the president's case will be left to find a solution in 2026.

The mandate of current Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani ends on April 7th 2026.

If the Parliament fails to elect the president, then it is distributed and new elections announced, which should be held within 45 days.
