Panic in Izmir, sea has attracted more than 200 metres

Following a series of earthquakes in Santorini, the sea in Izmir, and many other countries along the Aegean coast have withdrawn by more than 200 metres, Turkish media reported. The sea has begun to recede since February 8th, and today it has retreated by more than 300 meters to Chesme district and the port of Alaska, while the water level at Dickili and Bodrum Circle has dropped by more than half a meter, leaving behind many blocked boats.
Although citizens were alarmed, linking this phenomenon to earthquakes in Santorini, experts claim that seawater was withdrawn because of strong northern winds and that it is a natural process.
Mehmet Cavuşoğlu, member of the Environment, Biodiversity and Climate Change Group of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA) and prof. Dogan Yaşar declared that seawater was withdrawn due to strong northern winds reaching speeds of up to 60-70 miles per hour.
Yaşar stressed that the withdrawal had nothing to do with earthquakes in the Aegean Sea, saying there was no reason for concern.
Several new islands have been formed on the coast near Marmaris due to sea attractions, and the sea has also been attracted to the beaches of Uzunyali and Icmeler.
The sea has also withdrawn about 100m from the coast in Silivri near Istanbul, in the Balicsir region and in Dimim.
It was noted that as the water receded, the sand islands formed on the beach.
This phenomenon, according to experts who stressed that the reason for the withdrawal of sea water in Dardane and on the coast of Anadol is a strong northern wind, must last until Wednesday./abcnews. al
