US President Donald Trump's national security adviser, Mike Waltz, has said senior members of the administration will meet with European officials this week for the way they end the war in Ukraine.
And the step comes almost three years after Russia began its full-scale invasion of its neighbor in 2022.
Less than a day before this announcement, US media reported that Trump had had a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss steps towards a negotiated solution.
However, there has been no immediate confirmation of that conversation from either the White House or the Kremlin.
Even National Security adviser Mike Waltz refused to comment on it in a television interview.
Waltz said that the Russian economy is not doing well and that Trump “is prepared to tax, tarifer, sanction” Moscow to take Putin to the negotiating table.
But Waltz also underlined that the Trump administration is seeking to use the commitments this week to start talks on attracting part of the United States' support to Ukraine.
He said European allies would also have to take a bigger role in supporting the ongoing Ukraine.
Those conversations will happen this week. And I think a fundamental principle here is that Europeans must possess this ongoing conflict. President Trump will end it. And then in terms of security guarantees, this will be with Europeans”.
According to foreign media, vice president JD Vance will be in Paris later Monday for an artificial intelligence summit that will gather government officials and later this week go to the Security Conference in Munich, where President Volodyyr Zelensky will head the Ukrainian delegation.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, will also attend Munich's conference.
On Wednesday, Hegseth will join the main international forum for arms and ammunition collection for Ukraine.
The United Kingdom has been gathering “ ” its 26th meeting of the Ukrainian Defence Contact Group, a group of about 50 partner countries, at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday. /Telegraph
