Thousands of citizens took part in mass protests in Brussels against pension reforms proposed by Belgium's new government.
Protesters, belonging to different unions and groups, sought changes in the pension system, which they considered harmful, especially for those with lower incomes.
The proposed reforms would reward those who work until after retirement age with 35 years of service, while pensioners who retire earlier, without 35 years, would face a sentence. The new system was less favorable for those who had shorter careers.
Protests erupted in clashes with police. As a result of the strike, Brussels Airport cancelled 430 flights and public transport and postal services were also cut off.
Firemen and military personnel participated in the strike, expressing themselves against changes that directly affect the level of living and the security of pensions.
