The European Commission insists on continued implementation of the Ohrid Agreement, which ended the 2001 conflict in northern Macedonia. This institution has conveyed its position through spokesman Guillaume Mercier during the European Commission's noon conference.
Mercier has reacted to the question regarding allegations that Albanian opposition parties have raised against the North Macedonian government. According to these parties, the government has violated the Ohrid Agreement over the past nine months, limiting the representation of Albanians in the country's institutions and key organs, as well as removing Albanian as an official language.
“We are closely following developments in northern Macedonia. Continued implementation of the 2001 Ohrid Agreement remains an essential element for the country's democracy and stability, and this calls for the inclusion of all interested parties --” -- has been expressed, Guillaume Mercier, spokesman for Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.
Another European Commission concern remains the constitutional changes in northern Macedonia, which are hampering the country's progress on the road to European integration. Northern Macedonia authorities have yet to meet the condition involved in the negotiating framework for European Union integration, known as “French proposal”. That condition relates to the fulfillment of Bulgaria's bid to include the Bulgarian minority in the pre-multiple of the country's Constitution.
Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has declared before the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Commission that she hopes North Macedonia authorities will fulfil this commitment so that the country can proceed with the concrete opening of membership negotiations.
