In the prosecution's statement, one person allegedly attacked police officers in the town of Mulhouse, shouting “Allahi Akbar” on Saturday afternoon.
A passinger of the case was killed after trying to intervene, while three police officers were injured, the prosecutor's office added.
The “is without a doubt an Islamist terrorism act”, President Macron told reporters under the French farmers' annual fair works, adding that the interior ministry was headed towards the town of Mulhouse.
The suspect has been arrested, the prosecutor's office announced.
