The statement comes at the time when the Trump administration is adding pressure on Venezuela with a major military delocation in the Caribbean, including the world's largest aircraft carrier.
Washington says the aim is to curb drug trafficking, but Caracas insists the ultimate goal is to change the regime in Venezuela.
US forces have carried out attacks against more than 20 suspected vessels for smuggling drugs from Venezuela to the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean since early September, killing more than 80 people.
Regional tensions have increased as a result of campaign and military delocation.
The New York Times reported on Friday that the two leaders had spoken by telephone last week and had discussed a possible meeting in the United States.
Phone conversations between Trump and Maduros came out a day after the US president said that land operations would soon be launched to stop drug trafficking from Venezuela, increasing tensions with Caracas. /Periscope/
