Two prisoners escaped from the disciplinary wing of the detention centre in Dijon prison early Thursday after cutting off the irons of their cages, believed to have been sent with fear, prosecutors said. The fugitives are a 19-year-old under investigation for attempted murder and criminal conspiracy, and a 32-year-old man accused of common threats and violence against a husband/wife, according to local media reports citing the Force Ovrière Union.
Both who then used blankets to cross the thorn - wire fence were in isolation without contact with the outside world, according to reports. Both are considered dangerous.
The FO Justice Union said it had warned for months of worsening security in the Dijon prison.
Despite our repeated warnings, the management has chosen to continue in its total blindness, refusing to see reality on the ground”, the union said in a Facebook statement.
The escape came after the escape of a prisoner from Rennes-Vézin Prison in Ille-et-Vilaine last week during a walk in a planetarium.
Justice Minister Gérad Darman immediately dismissed the prison governor.
On Wednesday, three prison unions issued a joint statement accusing Darman of giving priority to sources for crime combat operations targeting dangerous drug traffickers, while neglecting prison services.
They criticised the minister's “disdaining” and accused him of doing everything “to preserve his image of commitment and reaction”.
French prisons hold about 85,000 prisoners, exceeding the official capacity of 62,509 countries, according to the Justice Ministry figures from July. The average charge rate is 135.9%, with 29 objects exceeding 200%.
