Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing a long trial of corruption, has filed an official request to the country's president to forgive him.
Netanyahu, who is the only prime minister in office in Israel's court history, said the issue had divided the country and a pardon would help restore national unity.
He also said that the request to appear in court three times a week is a distraction that makes it difficult for him to lead the country.
President Isaac Herzeg's office said it was “an extraordinary request” bearing “implications significant”.
But the president will consider the request with responsibility and sincerity” after consulting “relevant authorities” at the justice ministry and legal departments, according to his office, writes Skynews.
This comes after US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Herzeg asking him to take “falte completely” Netanyah earlier this month.
Otherwise, the Netanyah trial, which began in 2020, is not over yet.
He has been declared innocent of all charges involving bribery and fraud.
Netanyah was indicted in 2019 on three counts, including charges of receiving gifts from business representatives.
Benjamin Netanyahu insists he will be acquitted even if the trial ends.
His argument, presented on 111 pages, is that the trial is such a distraction that it is damaging national interest and affecting its ability to govern.
He also claims the investigation was prompted by the malicious intention of incriminating it “at any cost”, despite his decades in public service. /Telegraphy/ Periscope.
