Gunshot suspect at the National Guard worked with CIA in Afghanistan.

American officials have said that Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the Afghan accused of shooting at the two members of the National Guard Wednesday, worked alongside the CIA in Afghanistan before coming to the US four years ago. Suspect charged with assaulting two members of West Virginia troops, Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Andrew Wolfe, age 24 blocks from the White House.
“We are praying that they will survive and that the highest charge may not be the murder of the first instance”, US District Attorney Jeanie Pirro said on Thursday.
LacanWal came to the U.S. in 2021, according to a programme offering special immigration protection for Afghans following the withdrawal of America from Afghanistan.
At a press conference Thursday, Pirro and FBI Director Cash Patel explained Lacanwalk's connection to American forces.
There is confirmation, said Patel, that suspect “had a relationship in Afghanistan with partner forces”, before being transferred to the US.
LacanWal helped preserve American forces at Kabul airport, while thousands of people rushed to leave Afghanistan before the Taliban took power, a former military commander who served alongside him sends the telegraph to the BBC.
The father of five children was recruited to Kandahar Attack Force Unit 03 nine years ago.
His unit was known locally as the Scorpion Forces, initially operating under the CIA, but ultimately for the Afghan intelligence department known as the National Security Directorate.
LacanWal was a GPS tracking specialist, the former commander for the BBC said, describing it as a “sports and cheerful” personage.
His entire unit moved from Kandahar to Kabul five days before the Taliban entered the capital. They continued to protect the airport for another six days before they too were transported by helicopter to the U.S.
Following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, the Benden administration with two-party support created a programme called Operation “Welcome to the Allies, which allowed some 77,000 Afghans to enter the US under special immigration protection.
The programme was in force for about a year after the US withdrawal.
Lacanwalk, 29, was among those who entered the United States through this programme and applied for asylum in 2024. His request was approved earlier this year. /Periscope/
