German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said at a news conference in Berlin: “Now it is up to Russia to sit at the negotiating table”.
“Ukraine needs strong armed forces, and if a peace deal is reached, Ukraine will continue to need strong armed forces and reliable security guarantees from its” partners, Merz added.
This strong Ukrainian army, says Merz, is the most important guarantee, broadcasting Telegragraphy.
The US-Russia peace plan envisioned a Ukrainian army limited to 600,000 people, while European counterpropossions placed the peacetime figure at 800,000 personnel.
