In the United Kingdom, some 14 million people live under high blood pressure, but about half of them do not know they have this problem. If left untreated, hypertension can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney problems, densities, and even early deaths.
The new study notes that reducing alcohol consumption can result in significant reductions in blood pressure, even for those who drink only a few. Alcohol increases blood pressure by stimulating the nervous system, increasing heart rate, and narrowing blood vessels.
NHS guidelines recommend that you do not spend 14 units of alcohol a week ʹ the equivalent of about six glasses of wine. Also, the American Heart Society's instructions suggest that women abstain from alcohol a day, and men go through two or less.

The study analyzed the data of 58,943 adults between 2012 and 2024, monitoring changes in blood pressure and the amount of alcohol consumed. The results showed that those who banned alcoholic beverages saw an apparent reduction in blood pressure. Women who usually consumed one to two drinks a day experienced a reduction of 1.14 mmHg in diastolic pressure, while men experienced 1.62 mmHg.
Meanwhile, those who began to drink alcohol after the study began saw an increase in pressure related to the amount of alcohol consumed. Interestingly, the type of alcohol - wine, beer, or strong drink - had no particular effect, indicating that the amount is the main factor.
Dr. Takahiro Suzuki, the lead author of the study, explained:
