Researchers found that GLP-1 drugs slow down the speed with which alcohol enters the bloodstream, causing the brain to feel less its effects.
This means that those who take these drugs may feel less drunk, even though they consumed the same amount of alcohol.
“The people who drink know the difference between a summer glass and a shoot,” explained researcher Alex DiFeliceantonio from the Fralin Biomedical Institute.
Both have the same amount of alcohol, but one show increases the alcohol level in the blood much faster. If GLP-1 drugs slow down this process, they can help people drink less. ”
Twenty obese persons attended the study, half of which were being treated with a GLP-1 drug. After consuming an alcoholic drink within 10 minutes, they measured their alcohol levels in their breath and the feeling of drunkenness.
Those who used GLP-1 drugs reported less feelings of drunkenness, while laboratory data showed that this was related to the slowdown of the stomach.
These findings open up new opportunities to treat alcohol addiction.
Our preliminary data suggests that the GLP-1 acts differently from other drugs that affect the nervous system. It may help reduce alcohol consumption through another mechanism,” added DiFeliceantonio.
