The Senate confirmed it late Monday, making him the first member of the Trump cabinet to receive Congress approval, the BBC reports.
Rubio has many years of experience serving on the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee and talking about international conflicts during his term in the Senate.
He is now the country's top American diplomat, overseeing more than 70,000 federal employees working for the US State Department.
Rubio is considered a “skifter” of foreign policy, which means someone taking hardline positions, in this case against Iran and China.
