The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Kaya Kallas, is expected to appoint Danish diplomat Peter Sorensen as EU special representative for dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia.
Sorensen, former EU special representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, will likely soon assume the position of the mediator. In the past five years, there has been Slovak diplomat Miroslav Lajcak, who has played a key role in European efforts to normalise relations between Pristina and Belgrade.
According to information provided by Radio Free Europe, Peter Sorensen's name has been sent for approval to EU member states. This candidacy is expected to be considered at an EU Policy and Security Committee meeting (PSC), where all member states of the bloc are represented.
Sorensen's confirmation by member states is only a formalisation, as the selection has already been made by Kaya Kallas, broadcasts albanianpost.
Sorensen has served as a special emissar of the EU high representative in Serbia. In addition, the Danish diplomat has also been engaged in the OSCE mission in Croatia. Also, he has been chief of the EU delegation in Northern Macedonia. He is currently an adviser to the EU Foreign Service for digital diplomacy.
Contrary to the fact that Kosovo and Serbia have reached an agreement early last year, initially in Brussels, then in Ohrid, and despite the insistence of Western diplomats that the Brussels and Ohrid Annex are legally binding, it has not been implemented, until tensions between the two neighbours continue to rise.
