Recently, the Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported that the first waves hit the coast of Miyazak, but more are expected, writes the New York Times.
Otherwise, the first quake took place less than 20 miles [32 km] off the coast of Miyazaki in Kyushu, according to the U.S. Geological Service.
According to the agency, a stronger 7.1 magnitude earthquake followed less than a minute later.
The public broadcaster announced that no building has collapsed in the area and nuclear power plants are functioning normally.
