Putin has suggested that as the plane tried to land in Grozny (the capital of the Russian region of Chechen), Ukrainian drones were attacking Russia and Russian air defence forces prevented the attacks.
“Vladimir Putin apologised for the fact that the tragic incident took place in Russian airspace and once again expressed deep and sincere condolences for the victims' families and wished the wounded a quick recovery. At the time, Grozni, Mozdoc, and Vladikavkazi were under attack by Ukraine's non-pilot air vehicles and Russian air defence systems pushed these attacks”, Says a statement issued by the Kremlin.
The passenger plane crashed Wednesday near the town of Aktau in Kazakhstan after slipping from southern Russia, where it reportedly Ukrainian fears were attacking several cities.
At least 38 people lost their lives, and 29 other passengers survived the air accident, receiving multiple injuries.
The White House has already said that early indicators indicate that the plane could have crashed from Russia and two American military officials told it. NBC News that American intelligence has discovered that Russia may have incorrectly identified the plane as a threat and dropped it.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, meanwhile, told Vladimir Putin that the plane was subject to “physical and technical external intervention” in Russian airspace.
His words were similar to those used by the Azerbaijan Airlines company, which has suspended a host of flights to Russian cities as a result of the incident.
