Protests erupted in the Christian neighbourhoods of the Syrian capital Damascus after a Christmas tree was set on fire in another town by unidentified people Monday evening, CNN reports.
A video showing several men setting fire to a Christmas tree publicly displayed in the majority Christian town of Suqayalabiyaah, near the town of Hama, appeared on the internet, promoting protests. It is unclear who set fire to the tree, but a video of a rebel standing next to Christian priests was shown, vowing to punish the authors.
The next morning you will see the tree fully restored”, the unidentified rebel told a protest group near the Christmas burning tree.
The incident occurred three weeks since opposition rebels led a successful campaign to oust President Bashar al-Assad. Syria Christians now join them in Lebanon and Palestinian territories celebrating Christmas amid uncertainty and great fear in the region.
