At least 20 people, including five children, have been killed as a result of Israeli attacks Saturday evening and Sunday morning, Palestinian health officials said.

Meanwhile, Israeli authorities allowed Cardinal Pierbattista Pizaballa, who is the leader of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, to enter Gaza to attend a Mass before Christmas with members of the small Christian community in enclaves.

An attack on a school sheltering displaced people in the town of Gaza left at least eight people dead, including three children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Civil protection, linked to the Hamas-led government, said earlier that four children were among those killed.

The Israeli army declared it carried out a precise attack on Hamas militants who were sheltering there.

Hamas is declared a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union.

An attack on a house in the central city of Deir al-Balah late Saturday left at least eight people dead, including three women and two children, according to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, which accepted their troops.

A man and his wife were killed in an attack in the southern town of Han Yunis on Sunday shortly after midnight, according to the nearby Nasser Hospital. An attack on a car in Gaza City killed two people, according to the Health Ministry.

There was no immediate comment from the military on these attacks.

Israel is continuing to conduct daily attacks in Gaza even more than 14 months after the start of the war with Hamas. Israel says it only targets militants, accusing them of hiding among civilians, but bombings often kill women and children.

The Gaza war began when Hamas' militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, where some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed, and some 250 were kidnapped.

Since then, Israel's revenge war in Gaza has left more than 45,000 Palestinians dead, most of whom women and children, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza.

Israel says at least a third of those killed were militants and says it tries to avoid harming civilians. / REL/
