The Vatican has updated the litrical book regulating the funeral rite of the popes, simplifying some of the rituals at Pope Francis' request.
The second edition of Ordo Exsequirum Romani Pontificis (“The funeral order for Roman popes”) is a review of the version published in 2000 and used for Pope John Paul II funerals in 2005 and Pope Benedict XVI in 2023.
Among the changes to the new publication, according to “Vatian News”, is the elimination of the use of three Cyprus coffins, lead and oaks, as well as the possibility that a late pope is buried outside the Vatican Basilica. Another difference is that public viewing before the funeral will be done with the bones already in a simple, wooden coffin, not in a tall beer, as had been done before. Constalling Pope's death will take place in the Pope's hat, not in his room.
Pope Francis “has in some cases declared the need to simplify and adapt certain rituals so that the celebration of the Roman bishop's funeral better express the Church's belief in the resurrected Christ”, master of papal ceremonies, Archbishop Diego. Rawell, he told Vatican News.
The renewed “Rit --” said Ravelli, “also needed to be highlighted more than the Roman pope's funeral is that of a pastor and disciple of Christ rather than of a powerful person of this world”.
