The research, conducted with over 83,000 British adults equipped with motion monitors, found that changing stays with the one sitting on foot without active movement or exercise, does not bring health benefits. Moreover, the long term attitude can have negative effects on the heart, increasing the likelihood of problems such as variable veins or numbness in deep veins (DVT), according to Australian researchers.
The main message is that long-term standing does not compensate for a sedentary lifestyle and may be dangerous for some people in terms of blood flow health”, Dr. Matthew Ahmad, the head of the study by Sydney University.
Researchers recommend adding more movement to their day than relying solely on standing.
For those who sit for long periods, the inclusion of occasional movements and structured exercises may be a better way to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease”, co-author Emmanuel Stamatakis said.
Previous research by the same team showed that only six minutes of intensive exercise, or 30 minutes of moderate activity per day, can help reduce the risk of heart in those who sit down for more than 11 hours each day.
New findings were published in the Journal of Epidemiology.
