Rrustem Umerov will replace Olexii Reznikov in the position of Ukrainian defence minister.

Umerov is the leader of the Tatar community in Crime, which has represented his country in sensitive negotiations with Russia, writes Guardian, translates Periscopi.

Umerov was born in Soviet Uzbekistan, the place where his family had gone to exile as a result of Stalin's regime. His family returned to Crime when he was a child, and when the Tatars were allowed to return, it's about the 1980s, 1990s.

The 41-year-old Muslim started his business on the telecom network in 2004, meanwhile in 2019, he won a seat as an MP in the Ukraine parliament.

From there, he served as leader of the Christian Platform, a diplomatic effort to withdraw from Russian annexation in 2014.

He has served for years as adviser to the historic leader of the criminal leader of Tatars, Mustafa Dzhemev.

Russia took control of the Crime in 2014 by imposing a referendum on annexing this region from Ukraine, an act that is opposed by Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Tatar community, which makes up about 15 % of the crime population, about 2 million people, boycotted the Russian referendum.

After this act, Moscow had banned the traditional Muslim minority parliament of Tatar BiH by announcing it as an extremist organisation and had imprisoned many of its members.

Russia's “Propaganda uses such an alternative, dividing the Ukrainian nation on ethnic grounds only to justify its stake in our country”. Says Rrustem Omerov, quoted Guardian, translates Periscopi.

We don't experience any kind of chauvinism or Islamaphbie here in Ukraine, based on religious or ethnic affiliation”, it concludes.

Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky announced on September 3rd through a post on Telegram, saying the new leadership at the Ministry of Defence was necessary after Reznikov passed through “more than 550 days of a wide-scale fight”.

Meanwhile, later through an address, Zelensky said he believes the Ministry needs a new approach and other forms of interaction, both with the military and society”.

Ukraine's “Parliament has such a person, and Umero does not need to be introduced. I expect his candidacy to have the support of Parliament”, Zelensky said.

Reznikov's dismissal comes after a scandal over the procurement of military jackets by the Ministry of Defence. In August, Ukrainian journalists reported that these materials were bought at a triple higher price, and summer jackets were purchased instead of winter jackets. In customs documents for the purchase of these products, a jacket was said to have a $29 price, but the Ukrainian Defence Ministry had paid $86 per piece. Reznikov last week during a media conference denied all charges.

On September 3rd, US President Joe Biden told reporters he was aware Zelensky would replace his defence chief. Asked by journalists to comment on this development, Biden said that he would not comment publicly “”.
