Lack of irrigation system reduces production in the country

The lack of an agricultural irrigation system also directly affects productivity reductions. In Kosovo, currently, only about 20,000 hectares are under the irrigation system. Farmers stress that the Ministry of Agriculture should prioritize the expansion of the system even in municipalities that are not present in this system. An intensive agricultural producer [...]
An intensive agricultural producer cannot be efficient if there is not enough moisture or irrigation system. In most cases in Kosovo, farmers have made personal solutions to create a irrigation system. Even the farmer from Peja, Milaim Shala, tells Radio Kosovo he has invested in his own irrigation system from the three wells opened in his field.
We have our own system. We have three wells in the depth of 40 feet. It costs but it's not high enough just until you distribute the irrigation system across the greenhouses and open fields. Through the greenhouse irrigation system it's dot-point and on the open field we have it at”, he said.
Agriculture Professor Imer Rusinovac points out that so far it has been a designated area of the irrigation system but not finished as is the Iber system Iber lepenc. Russia tells Radio Kosovo that our country is ranked last for failure to function the irrigation system.
“Without irrigation system, a stable producer, stabilizes a satisfactory productivity for this or that culture, cannot be recorded and cannot be present”, he said.
Even the head of the Kosovo Agricultural Union, Tahir Tahiri, agrees that the irrigation system functions only 20 percent and that this system is outdated.
The “is overextended this system, misused, left behind, and construction on the network of these hydrosystems and construction has hampered the functioning of these systems. Kosovo needs irrigation, and irrigation does not even function 20 percent”, he said.
According to Department of Agriculture statistics, the total number of irrigation surfaces in Kosovo during 2022 total 18 thousand and 884,86 hectares. Water data every year is required by all municipalities in Kosovo, but in 2022 only 28 municipalities reported.
Meanwhile, the Kosovo government has approved the initiative to negotiate the Grant Agreement between the Republic of Kosovo, represented by the Ministry of Finance, Labour and Transfers and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association for “Project on the Upgrade and Rehitation of Water Systems worth 9m euros.
