The suspension of Klan Kosovo's business certificate by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Trade has sparked many reactions.
Among them is renowned American professor Alon Ben Meir, who knows political developments in the Western Balkans, who has said the government and Prime Minister Albin Kurti are violating freedom of speech.
“Suspending of Klan Kosovo's license, the largest private television in the country, due to an error in the census is undoubtedly unilateral with the current violation. The fact that the certificate presented Kosovo's cities as Serbia's cities has already been corrected, even though it took several weeks, should be sufficient for the government to annul the decision to close television. However, the Kosovo government's decision -- and especially Prime Minister Kurti's -- to keep Klan Kosovo's business license suspended and to shut down television -- leaves the impression that the government is limiting freedom of speech”, Meir wrote.
Ben-Meir stressed that the executive should take steps to lift the suspension, following the correction of documentation on the part of Kosovo Clan.
“In the joint statement of the embassies of the United States, Italy, France, Germany and Britain, known as the QUINT group, we are said to be concerned in particular that the removal of the Kosovo Clan business license is an unproportional decision that will have consequences in Kosovo's media plurality, suggests a sincere concern. The Kosovo government should take immediate steps to lift the suspension. Given the differences between Kosovo and the EU for the association of municipalities, the last thing Kurt needs at this particular moment is increasing EU tensions, especially regarding one of the most fundamental pillars of democracy”.
