U.S. Embassy reacts: Municipal building decision in northern Mitrovica contrary to our demands

The United States Embassy (SHBA) in Kosovo said Wednesday that the local authorities' decision in Northern Mitrovica for “the removal of Serbian institutions from the municipal building in the Bosniaks' Lagen has not been taken in co-ordination with the international community, nor in line with its demands for non-intervention and actions that could [...]

On August 22nd, local authorities in North Mitrovica ʹ one of the four majority Serb municipalities in northern Kosovo delivered their subject to the Serbian List's deputy chairman, Igor Simuri, a report saying that Serbian institutions should release “in three days.

In response to Radio Free Europe, the US Embassy said 23 August that the US has advised the Government of Kosovo, including the mayors of municipalities in the north, to refrain from the company of any action that increases tensions.

“We estimate that these actions, which are not co-ordinated with the international community, are contrary to our demands for avoiding actions that could escalate tensions, or may be perceived as escalation”, the American Embassy in Kosovo said.

The municipal inspector said he was not offered any documentation under which Serbia's institutions can exploit that object, and that Serbia's institutions were earlier announced that they should prepare and submit documents or contracts to exploit the object.

Four institutions being funded by the Government of Serbia are located in the contested building: The Office for Kosovo in the Government of Serbia, the Centre for Social Work from Vushtrria and the Administrative District of Kosovo Mitrovica.

The Serbian list, the largest party of Kosovo Serbs to have Belgrade's backing, announced that “the unlegitimist leaders have gone a step further and want to take the objects too”.

On the other hand, from the municipality of North Mitrovica, they say their officials have met with Serbian List Deputy Chairman Igor Simun, who has told them that “has no documents for the object and that he does not know whose ownership it is. ”

As a leader of the Fund for Pension Security and Invalidor.

The Serbian List also asked the international community “is being respected in this way for their appeal to the non-legitimists to do only administrative work and not make political decisions against the citizens of our municipalities?”

North Mitrovica Mayor Erden Attic, who comes from the Vetevendosje Movement of Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

In the four majority Serb municipalities in northern Kosovo, northern Mitrovica, Leposaviq, Zvecan and Zubin Potok ? Albanian leaders took power in late May, while municipal buildings have entered with police assistance.

They have strongly opposed the local Serb population, which has boycotted the April elections, from which those mayors have emerged.

Locals have been protesting in front of municipal objects in Leposaviq, Zvecan and Zubin Potok for nearly three months, urging Kosovo police to withdraw and Albanian leaders not to get to work.

In these three municipalities, by the end of May, even municipalities according to the Serbian system have worked.

In northern Mitrovica alone, there is a special municipal building operating under the Kosovo system, and there has been no protests.
