This school year, which begins on September 1st, parents will buy their own books for their children. Unlike more than a decade since Kosovo, books have been given free of charge by the state. So announced Minister of Education Arberie Nagavci yesterday, adding that the tools for ministerial books were transferred to the parents ' account.
But how much will this cost a family in Kosovo living on social assistance?
Faithful Dragusha, chairman of the Parents' Council, has said that compared to the previous years, children's books can cost up to 80 euros.
“We have no information on how much they currently cost, from the previous years, has cost 70-80 euros that books for a child”, Dragusha said.
I realized that first there will be book reimbursement and then there will be a purchase that means payment and not remigration”.
For us as parents, it would be more convenient, and we call on the ministry, that the realisation, they buy the books, we don't need compensations, but we need ready books that are distributed to schools like it was in the previous years”.
This figure of 80 euros, compared to the social scheme in Kosovo, translates into a huge burden for families who do not have employed persons.
According to a GAP Institute research in the period 2018-2022 in Kosovo, the amount of social assistance for the family by 1 member has been 60 euros, while the highest with 15 members has been 180 euros.
In turn, the three-member family, if it's estimated to have two parents and one child, then in September it will have only 10-20 euros to spend on the essential living basket if it decides to have his child equipped with textbooks.
The situation becomes more serious for families with social assistance that have more than one child, since the amount of social assistance in any form does not compensate for the price of a package of books. However, it remains to be seen what parents ' repurchasing mode will be and whether this will be done before or after buying books.
