The European Commission, the EU executive arm, published today a proposal that will be the legal basis on which the production of a digital euro can begin.
The executive has submitted a legislative proposal for the legal course of cash ready in euros to ensure that it is accepted and accessible in the euro area, and a legislative proposal establishing the legal framework for the digital euro along with cash ready in euros.
If approved by the European Parliament and the Council, the ECB will decide whether and when to issue the digital euro, expectations are not before 2028.
The digital “would be a useful complement for cash, but would not replace it, offer an alternative to digital means of payment. It would be safer, immediate, and appropriate way to pay”. EU Commission Deputy Chairman Valdis Dombrovski said when he presented the legislative proposal of the European executive.
