Education experts: Institutions Work to Improve Status

Last test score P IRLS show that Kosovo students do not stay well in reading, as they are listed below the average of this test. Directors of organisations taking the promotion of reading are praising that these results have been expected and that responsible institutions are not taking these results on the basis of [...]

In June 2021 students from several schools who were first selected in Kosovo have participated in the International Reading Test “P IRLS 2021”, which results are not satisfactory since they are ranked below the average of this test and the last of the countries in the region. Organisation Director “ETEA”, Agon Ahmeti, told Kosovo Radio that it is unfortunate that following the poor results Kosovo students are reaching in various tests such as P ISA, these results are not being taken to the ground and something done nationally to improve this situation.

“The disaster I think is that it's not working then with results derived from these tests. Based on test results P The ISA is not that we have seen any national policy-level companies to improve the results. Not only to improve the results for the sake of tests, but to take these results to base and work to advance the education system in Kosovo”, he said.

Ahmeti, I add that the Ministry of Education and Culture should create a working group at the level of local and international experts for drafting a strategic plan for new reading access.

The first thing I consider to be done is for the Ministry of Education, why not with that of culture since we're talking about reading, to create a team of local and international experts to design a strategic plan, new teaching approach in relation to the book and reading process. And also unite members and civil society organisations that have experience and have done work in this direction”, Ahmeti said

And education connoisseurs are assessing that these results are not and that it is necessary to promote reading in every course of learning. Youth Qehaja from Institute “Edguard” told Kosovo Radio that schools should have unlimited access to unlimited literature and that it requires the commitment of all to improve the situation.

“Kosovo students' literacy is not as surprising as it is surprising as institutional neglect of reading in our schools. Reading should be promoted in every subject as a dedication from every student's teaching. Schools should have unlimited access to various titles, up - to - date literature, but interesting literature that stimulates student reading curiosity. It is the responsibility of all of the community to promote reading together as routine for young people to thus ensure a healthy future for all students”, Qehaja said.

Meanwhile, the Pristina municipality has announced days before that it will soon begin reading at all Pristina elementary schools, for all first-class students up to fifth.

Kosovo result in reading test P IRLS is 421 points in the ranking, average this is significantly lower than the 500 points of PIRLS. PIRLS is an international study of reading trends, which have been conducted since 2001 and is held every 5 years and currently participate in 50 countries. And in 2021 Kosovo has also participated for the first time, and only fourth - grade students were part of the test.

Otherwise, this type of testing is aimed at measuring the achievements of fourth-grade reading students, while currently serving to compare the efficiency of teaching methods in a global context.
