U.S. police have reported that at least 90 cars were involved in the accident, yet it is not known exactly how many people lost their lives.
Part of the highway is closed, and is expected to remain so until afternoon hours Wednesday.
Officials have opened accession centres for the reunification of families of victims of this accident in the town of Divernon near the highway.
Videos and photos published on social networks show clouds of smoke and burned cars, and many others damaged kh was also reported on explosions.
