The trial against Shala began on February 21st 2023, where the same was declared innocent, while the prosecution and the protection of the victims submitted the opening statements.
In his statement before the court, Peter Shala, charged with war crimes, has declared he has fought a military police machine of Slobodan Milosevic's criminal regime, but never against civilians, RTKlive reports.
Otherwise the indictment against Shala was confirmed on June 12, 2020, and the edited version became public on April 15, 2021. On October 18th 2021, the preliminary procedure judge partially approved the defence motions and ordered the SPS to change the indictment in order to provide the required level of concrete and clarity regarding the accused's personal participation in the incidents. Z The SP handed over the correct indictment on November 1, 2021. This was an act in effect in this case.
The crimes Shala is accused of were committed approximately between May 17th 1999 and June 5, 1999, against persons detained at the metal factory in Kukes (Albania), allegedly used by the KLA. According to the indictment, the victims of these crimes were all RFJ citizens and persons who did not participate actively in combat.
The trial began on February 21st 2023 with the opening statements of the Specialised Prosecutor, the representative of victims and defence.
Shala was arrested on 16 March 2021 in Belgium and transferred to the detention facility of Kosovo's Specialised Chambers on 15 April 2021.
