The tragic event occurred shortly after 11: 00 p.m., at the local time. A passenger train with about 350 people on a freight train was involved in the accident. In addition to the fire, three passenger train cars ended off track.
Greek authorities put the railway station in Larissa at midday in handcuffs, as investigations into the serious event follow.
Meanwhile, infrastructure and Transport Minister Costas Karamanlis has resigned.
For several years I have contributed to politics, but I consider it an important element of democracy that citizens of our country still have confidence in our political system. This is called political responsibility. So I resign as minister of Infrastructure and Transport. That's the least I can do in respect to”, Karamanlis writes.
