A 350 passenger train crashed into a freight train in the Tembit Valley near Larissa.
As a result, 32 people have died and 85 have been hurt, 25 of them in critical condition. Another 270 have been transported by buses to Thessalonica.
The clash took place shortly after midnight, when Athens' destination passenger train in Thessaloniki crashed on a freight train in the opposite direction and caught fire, Ekatherini reports, conveys Klakosova.tv.
Eyewitnesses say that the first two cars were completely destroyed, while three other passenger train cars were out of the tracks. Over 40 ambulances have gone to the site, as well as fire departments with 150 people, 32 police officers with 15 vehicles have isolated the location of the accident, hospitals across the area are being put on alert to address the injured, the Minister of Health is in place.
Although the causes of the accident are not yet known, it is estimated that it involves a human error. The station in Larissa is suspected to have put the passenger train on the wrong track, resulting in both trains being in the same bag from two different directions and crash with great force.
It is also estimated that the number of victims will increase, as passengers of the first two cars have not yet been found.
