Szunyog: Association, Under Constitutional Court Decision

The deal, which is the derivative of the Franco-German proposal for which Kosovo and Serbia agreed on Monday, February 27th, according to European Union Office in Kosovo Chief Tomasz Szunyog, will bring tangible results for both countries and Europe. Current comments and criticism of this [...]

Current comments and criticism of the deal, the Czech diplomat believes, are still premature, as the negotiation process is continuing.

“I noticed some of the comments. But again, from my point of view, those comments are premature, because we are still in the process of negotiations”, Szunyog said in an interview for Kosovo's Kosovo-based Serbian media, Radio Contact Plus.

Szunyog commenting on the issue of the Serb-run municipality Association, has said the same is an international Kosovo obligation that must be implemented as soon as possible.

“Even in the agreement reached Monday, there is a specific requirement for implementing all previous agreements. And I think we're very clear about this”, he added.

Although it is evident to the EU ambassador that Kosovo and Serbia differ on the issue of association, the same, according to him, must be implemented under the Kosovo Constitutional Court's decision.

So we have a legal framework that can form association. I have spoken with law experts, including Serbian and Albanian lawyers and experts, I have the feeling that there is room for compromise”.

Szunyog has further expressed concern over the vacuum of security created in northern Kosovo following the departure of Serbs from both central and municipal institutions, including the Police, the Judiciary, the Prosecutor, Dogan.

We see clearly that the situation is not healthy in the sense that institutions are not functioning, especially security institutions, which of course is the Kosovo Police, but also the judiciary”, he has stated.
