The United States has reacted carefully to Putin's statement, with a senior administration official saying there were no signs Moscow planned to use its nuclear weapons.
Putin compared his plans to deploy US weapons to Europe, saying Russia would not transfer control to Belarus, Reuters writes.
There is nothing unusual here, first of all, the United States has been doing this for decades. They have long placed their nuclear tactical weapons on the territory of their allies. We agreed that we will do the same without violating our obligations, I emphasise, without violating our international obligations for nonproliferation of nuclear weapons”, Putin has said.
