Nadia Kahf, a family and immigration law lawyer, began her career as the first Hijab judge in the United States, opening up new ground in US historyA.
American lawyer Nadia Kahf was appointed to the Supreme Court of New Jersey, becoming the first judge to wear a headscarf.
Kahf, a lawyer for the Syrian-born family and immigration law, was sworn in on a copy of the Holy Koran on Thursday, March 23, the local news page North Jersey reported.
While Kahf was not the first Muslim woman to serve as state judges, she was the first to wear a headscarf on the podium.
Kahf has been a member of the American-Islamic Relations Council, a Muslim civil rights organisation since 2003, where she currently serves as chairman.
Kahf is also legal adviser to “Wafa House”, a nonprofit organisation of family violence and Clifton-based social services and president of the Islamic Centre of Passaic District.
