To address the issue of air pollution in Kosovo, the Environment Ministry has said some measures were taken by the Kosovo Environment Protection Agency (AMMK) as responsible for monitoring air quality and providing information to the public.
According to the agency, air pollution and PM levels in Kosovo are a serious concern, but there are ways to take action to help improve air quality.
“By reducing our energy consumption, using public transportation and adopting sustainable practices in our daily lives, we can all do our part to help protect our environment and the health of our communities”, this agency says.
It is known that the PM refers to a mixture of solid, liquid particles that are suspended in the air, known as PM10 and PM2.5. According to the AMPC, Kosovo's primary resources are attributed to human activities as they are to the production of energy from coal, transport, industrial activities and small burns from households and services. During the winter months, Kosovo's PM levels tend to be higher because of burning coal, wood and other fuel for heating and energy production.
The PM's effects on human health are documented indicating that short-term exposure to the PM could cause eye, nose and throat irritation and make the existing respiratory situation and cardiovascular systems worse. Long - term exposure to PM is accompanied by increased risk of lung cancer, heart disease and brain attack. /Periscopi/
