The hot cloud of ash spread for more than four kilometers to the Bebeng and Krasak rivers in central Java, the Indonesian Disaster Management Agency.
Residents within four kilometers of the volcano were asked to withdraw and interrupt their activities in danger zones.
Mount Merapius is the most active volcano in Indonesia and is located in the Ring of Fire, a bow around most of the Pacific Ocean's edge, where seismic and volcanic activity often occurs.
Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common in Indonesia because the Archipelago is situated with the seismic ring.
The merapy erupted for the last time in January 2021, sending a river of needles down its slopes and causing gas clouds to rise 10,000m in the sky. As a result, heavy ash rains covered surrounding villages on Java Island.
In 2010 the Merapian volcano began a series of three explosions that left more than 300 people dead.
