Czech police are appealing for information about a stolen racehorse allegedly belonging to Chechen leader Ramzan Cadyrov. Zazu, a horse worth about 20,000 dollars, disappeared between Friday evening and Saturday morning. Cadyrov had another horse that was still in the stable in the Czech Republic, reports” BBC “.
The horses were detained in the Czech Republic due to sanctions imposed following the illegal annexation of Crime by Russia in 2014. Ramzan Cadyrov is a strong ally of Vladimir Putin, though recently he has criticised the Russian military leadership for its strategy in Ukraine. Last year, Czech radio reported that Chechen leader's race horse had been registered at the Czech Jockey Club since 2012.
Zazu disappeared from the Darkhorn stables near the town of Rudnice nad Labem, 50km north of Prague capital, police said. The statement said that the chain providing the barn door had been removed and that the horse had been stolen.
They are appealing to the public for any information on Zazu's whereabouts, noting that the 16-year-old horse has a faintly different white star on its forehead. Czech Radio reported that already in January last year, two men tried to steal two horses from the same stable.
Just a few weeks before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian - speaking men arrived at the barn claiming to have instructions to take the horses to Poland. They justified the request by arguing that animals under sanctions could shift beyond borders, provided they do not leave the European Union.
The owner then closed the stables to prevent horse theft. He says the two men spent five days sitting in a van parked outside the barn entrance before finally leaving. As part of sanctions, all price money from horse racing should be used for horse maintenance and the rest is frozen, which angered Cadyrov.
“What can be said about human rights in the West if they severely violate the rights of horses, the most peaceful, kind and gentle animals in the world? Cadyrov asked after that Facebook move.
