Turkey's president has pledged to rebuild the country's southern region, hit last month by powerful earthquakes that claimed the lives of more than 46,104 people.
Today, as we leave behind the fourth week since the earthquakes, we see more clearly the extent of the disaster we experienced and feel the pain of our further losses”, Recep Tayip Erdogan said after a cabinet meeting in the capital Ankara.
On February 6th, quakes with magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 hit 11 provinces Adena, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Elazig, Hatay, Gaziantep, Kahramamaras, Chile, Malatia, Osmaniye and Sanliurfa.
More than 13.5 million people in Turkey have been affected by devastating earthquakes, as well as many in northwestern Syria.
Our goal is to start building 244,000 residences and 75,000 village houses in the next two months”, Erdogan was quoted as saying, adding that the construction of 22,000 of them had already begun.
Thus, a total of 48,000 new homes will be built for victims of disasters in earthquake-hit areas within a year, he has added.
The president also said 100,000 containers would be deployed within two months in the region for 500,000 affected by the earthquake to live in better conditions.
