Although the European Union agreed to allow Croatia in the travel area in December 2022, Bulgaria and Romania recommended waiting longer to be allowed to enter.
One of the reasons Croatia wanted to join the Schengen area was to promote its tourism industry. Last year, the country's tourism sector represented 20% of its GDP.
In this case, EuroNews reports that the country's largest airport, Zagreb, has invested one million euros in updateing its terminals, creating more space for waiting zones and setting up additional kiosks for registering passengers from countries outside Schengen.
The Schengen zone is the largest free travel zone in the world. It now includes 27 countries, including 22 EU states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
