The appointed investigator will review classified reports of Canadian federal elections and make recommendations for the upcoming elections.
The leaders of rival political parties have called for a public investigation.
China has denied any intervention in the elections, calling claims “simply baseless”.
Last year, local media reported that Canadian intelligence identified a <x0 subdetermine” that supported Canadian candidates in the last elections.
According to reports, at least 11 candidates were supported by China in the 2019 federal elections.
Quoting anonymous intelligence officials, Global News reported that Beijing had provided funds for these candidates and that many of them had Chinese advisers in the campaign.
The operation, which was reportedly headed by China's consulate in Toronto, aimed at affecting Canadian politics.
The effort to intervene is believed to have had the goal of both the main political parties -- the Liberal Party of Prime Minister Trudeau and the opposition conservative party.
It remains unclear whether the operation was successful. / REL/
