EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell wrote on Twitter: “The acceptance of Russian nuclear weapons from Belarus would imply an irresponsible escalation and threat to European security”.
Belarus can still stop it, it's their choice. The EU is ready to respond with further sanctions”, he has said further.
This statement comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Saturday that Moscow plans to deploy nuclear tactical weapons in Belarus.
Ten aircraft capable of carrying weapons that are designed to be used on the battlefield reportedly have already moved there.
Earlier Sunday, NATO rebuked Moscow for its nuclear rhetoric <x0 dangerous and irresponsible” after Putin made the announcement of such a move.
In addition, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has criticised Russia's nuclear plans and called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council to address the possible threat.
